R.I.P. Zig Ziglar

Today we lost a great leader of wisdom in life and business, Zig Ziglar.  If you haven’t listened to his messages or read his books you are missing out. Rest in Peace Mr. Ziglar

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.

Andrew Zuckerman on Creativity

Words can’t express how much respect I have for the what Andrew Zuckerman has to say in this video interview series on photography and creativity. A must for all creatives. Also, if you aren’t familiar with his work….you’re missing out! One of my top 10 photographers.

“How are you supposed to live a life where you are bound by a teeny little category? If you can allow yourself to not be bound to be part of the medium your working in, especially now,  there’s more of a possibility of you creating things and finding satisfaction in what your doing”

“Not Working is bad for creative people. Creativity is transformation. Any sort of transformation in your life, in your day, is part of your life is part of your creative life….your work is your life”

Tom Ford

There are few people that impress me as much as Tom Ford. The man is a design genius. At 30 he took over Gucci when it was on the serious decline and not only designed the fashion lines but also the advertising and even the stores!  I posted this video about him because A. I feel it is so important to study talented people outside your profession, (Like photography)  and B. Because even he says in this video that he feels his success has come from his work ethic! (NOT AMAZING NATURAL TALENT, which he has)

“My creative drive is an obsession, perfectionism is almost an illness with me….you can only control so much you just have to let go, you’re not really in control of anything, of life, the older I get I learn that”

“Do things first and then talk about them”

Ford remains on my top 20 people to photograph their portrait.

For All Creatives

These fantastic words are for all the photographers and creatives just starting out! I might have to watch this everyday. I don’t care how big of the shoot I get to do, I still feel like the new kid on the block that has something to prove. This can be good or bad and everything thing is perspective.

Thank you IRA GLASS for you’re encouragement and wisdom!

Ansel Adams, 1958 Film

When I saw this video my jaw was on the floor and I suddenly felt so lazy. Why? In college I traded my shotgun for a Film NIkon SLR, shot only on auto, and I bought and had the film processed at Wal-Mart. Needless to say my whole 3 months of using the thing does not give me credibility as a photographer that reallllly shot film. I learned on digital and love it to death. So when you hang out with the photographers that really did shoot film and they go on about how digital isn’t really photography….I have to admit, I kind of get it now! His process of seeing exposure in the highlights and shadows, counting the seconds while he processed his negatives with chemicals. ALL took serious focus and technical skills!  It’s just different now.

Ansel Adams was the man. He was a jedi master of photography. King of Black and White Photography and took thousands of iconic landscape images which remain the best.  A true artist and massive environmentalist. His work and life has been a major influence to me.

So when we get to whining about we don’t have the newest model camera REMEMBER that we are LIGHT YEARS ahead of anything Mr. Adams touched or dreamed of! Imagine climbing a mountain shooting a couple frames, hauling all that heavy gear miles back before you got to see how the frame came out! No excuses! Go shoot!

Fake Celebrity Prank Calls Us Out

This guy might be my new hero. No he didn’t save anybody from danger or invent anything cool….BUT he just held up a mirror to show us how ridiculous our celebrity culture is today. He is not famous but his experiment shows ya that appearances do mean something. “fake it til ya make it”? haha. So much of this world is made on hype and people feel they HAVE to look like they know what’s going on to feel cool.

Question to ponder:
What are we placing false importance on?
Who or what is the fake celebrity in our lives?

Have fun!

U.S. Olympic Team Tribute to ALI

The greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali wasn’t just a fantastic fighter and Olympian…but the man knew marketing and promotion, whether he knew it or not. The man got the papers and people talking with all the talk so much that you couldn’t help but tune in to see if he really was the greatest like he declared or would the “loud mouth” get beat up.  History shows the truth that Ali is simply greatest! (like he told his in the first place!)

exclusive tribute by Steve Porter for Muhammad Ali – the special guest of Team USA’s 2012 Benefit Gala hosted at USA House the night before the London 2012 Opening Ceremony.

Picasso’s “Dove of Peace” Napkin Art

The story goes that Picasso was sitting in a Paris café when an admirer approached and asked if he would do a quick sketch on a paper napkin. Picasso politely agreed, swiftly executed the work, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a rather significant amount of money. The admirer was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you a minute to draw this!” “No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years”

Maybe my favorite story concerning business and art. This is for any artist, creative, photographer, videographer, painter, or even a cabinet maker that has been under appreciated. Experience is so often over looked when it comes to looking at numbers. Quality is why you got the job…Experience is why you have the quality. To me time is irrelevant to pricing for anything creative as long as the terms are agreed upon. X of $ = Y end product….The end. As long as you are done before your deadline who cares. Photographers get this pretty bad because all anybody hears is “CLICK”… little do people remember is it was years of “CLICKS” to learn how to make the quality image of today that the client desires.

Do not discount your investment in yourself my friend. If you accept the job for terms agreed upon then do the very best you can because your name will be on it forever!

Michael Jordan: Become Legendary

Motivation MONDAY! There are films, shorts, & commercials I can watch and will completely remind me of how I need to step it up. Like every other kid that grew up in 80’s and 90’s Michael Jordan was my hero. The man owned the sport and there has never been a better player than him, (READ THE STATS, AWARDS, ETC….No DEBATE). To hear him say the words in this video remind us that to be the greatest you have to work at it. No matter your success!
